Spotlight
STUDENT MINISTRY SHIFTJosh Shulkind recently returned from SHIFT - the Willow Creek Association Student Ministries Conference in Chicago. It was an amazing opportunity to not only connect with other youth leaders, but to also hear from those in leadership about the cultural and spiritual challenges facing our students at home, school and in the media. Josh wanted to pass along to you several
“SHIFTS” that are occurring with our kids and how youth ministries at HCC will be working with kids in these areas....
SHIFT...from debate to dialogue. There is a new focus of learning truth from each other through relationship, rather than trying to persuade each other to our own truth. Student Ministries is moving away from giving talks that present a problem and a single solution, to giving talks that present a problem and give multiple solutions. I am working to give students the tools to discuss, debate and make decisions in a small group environment. It is my hope that by learning these skills, kids will learn to seek the truth and to feed themselves by looking to the Bible.
SHIFT...from programs to relationship. Kids are longing for organic, open, and sincere relationships. They want to build community, rather than come together just based on ideology or program. Student Ministries is moving away from programmed events, to have at least one night a week to hang out with kids, focusing on relationships not program.
SHIFT...from informational to experiential; in the past, the use of reason was restricted to the five senses. Today, the focus becomes the experience and incorporating more ways of knowing truth. Student Ministries is working to offer worship services that help kids experience the Word of God through all the five senses.
SHIFT...from passive to interactive. We have clearly seen a shift with the increased ability for people to publish their own ideas in a public venue, e.g. You Tube, My Space, Face Book, etc. Student Ministries is working to use what has become every day for kids and involve them in shaping how our worship looks and sounds, including students producing videos or leading campus small groups.
